Japan's Anime International Company (AIC) signed a basic agreement with Singapore's Cubix International PTE Ltd. (Zodiac: The Race Begins) for a proposed live-action film adaptation of the Bubblegum Crisis anime franchise on October 30. AIC made the agreement through its Anime International Co. Asia PTE Ltd. subsidiary. The defunct ARTMIC studio created the original 1987-1991 video anime series about four women who protect a cybernetic future Tokyo with powered armor.

Cubix is planning a budget of several billion yen (several tens of millions of dollars) for the project. Along with AIC, the company is aiming for a 2011 release in the United States and elsewhere. The two studios intend to consult with former ARTMIC staffers Shinji Aramaki (screenplay and mechanical design) and Kenichi Sonoda (character design) to maintain a connection with the world concepts of the original series.

The original anime sold over 600,000 copies on laserdisc and video tape. It already spawned the AD Police Files prequel video anime series and the Bubblegum Crash sequel video anime series. The Bubblegum Crisis: Tokyo 2040 television anime series remade the original story in 1998 and spawned its own AD Police television series spinoff and the Parasite Dolls video series.

BGC Movie

I'm probably more interested in the "future animated projects" involving BGC than the live action movie. Axxis/Cubix in Singapore scares me in the sense that they've never done a live action movie before. Heck, even their CG stuff hasn't done that well yet either. Plus Axxis *tried* to announce the BGC movie back in May but no one apparently noticed. Makes me wonder if that's why AIC made the announcement now. Also have to wonder what affect the current economy is having on Axxis' 4 movie projects they have going. If they have to cancel one or two, is the BGC movie going to get the axe?

And, of course, that's not even beginning to scratch the surface of who would direct, where it would be shot, who would be cast, etc. etc. etc...

Too many questions, but lots of time to answer them. XP

Re: BGC Movie

For the animated, I wonder if it'll be BGC 2041 or something new like Parasite Dolls?

Re: BGC Movie

Please Lord in Heaven not something like Parasite Dolls!!!

2041 would be nice, but then we'll see...

Re: BGC Movie

*lol* Also not liking Parasite? If it had actually connected more to BGC 2040, I'd have been more forgiving...

Re: BGC Movie

Yeah, or if it actually bothered to develop the characters so that you cared when the characters were killed off and hurt, etc.

The new version of AD Police suffered from having no connection to BGC either

$10 bucks says the live-action movie stalls in pre-production hell.

Not really sure if I'm looking forward to this or not. On the one hand, it's always awesome to see something new come down the pike, but on the other, I'm worried as to ow it'll turn out. For all I know, this could be the anime equivalent of Batman and Robin. >.>

That pretty much sums up my attitude. Tho at least now the CGI tech is up to the challenge of animating Hardsuits....
